ArcelorMittal general manager for sustainable development and corporate responsibility Alan Knight told Mining Journal the most controversial areas of mining in most need of improving best practice in terms of ESG objectives would naturally be the last to conform to global standards.

He said companies with operations in well regulated jurisdictions that already insisted on higher levels of ESG performance would be quick to take up official standards and even certification, in part as a marketing tool, but sub-sectors like cobalt mining in the DRC were likely years away from meaningful transformation.
